BlastbeatSchool bands from across Ulster face off in the Northern Ireland final of the Coca-Cola Blastbeat competition at the Limelight, Belfast this Saturday, April 26 from 1pm until 6pm. The participants include: Frau Sandy (Columb’s College); Seven Story Weather (Campbell College); 6 Days Later (St Malachy’s College); Illict (De La Salle); Atlas (St. Colmcilles College); Jargon (St Malachy’s College); and The Audiables (De La Salle). Over the winter months, groups of 5th- and 6th-form students from across the province have organised into music business units to run local “battle of the bands” type events. These units then compete to win an all-expenses paid trip to the All-Island final in Dublin on May 17, 2008. The winning band receives an album deal with Blastspace Records.

Belfast “powerpop punk rock” band, Steer Clear reached the finals two years back and has since toured across the UK and Ireland. Steer Clear also played this year’s music festival in Texas, USA to some critical acclaim. Lead vocalist Pádraig McAlister said: “Blastbeat gave us an opportunity to ‘make it’. It’s a serious opportunity.”

Blastbeat supremo Robert Stephenson said: “This project is about empowering students to learn about business while having fun finding, promoting and marketing young bands and artists in their schools and local Blastbeat communities.” More: www.blastbeat.org
