Robin James Hurt: guitar demon
March 12, 2008 |
Rena Maguire writes: The acoustic guitar phenomenon and widely aclaimed musicians’ musician Robin James Hurt plays the The Rotterdam Bar again on March 27. This will be the first chance to get a sneak preview of the new tracks on his next (as yet unnamed) album due late March 2008. Born in Belfast, raised in Scotland and living in Dublin for many moons now, Hurt blends traditional Scottish music with a 21st century variety of Irish soulfulness, creating a genre which is unique and uplifting. His first album, “The Spiders Legs” seems to adorn the collections of many of the great and good (and perhaps even the not so good), but made little impact commercially. The new album, in its final stages of production, promises some shocks, some new directions and a whole lot of juicy acoustic goodness. We’ll still wonder how one man and one guitar sounds like there’s a whole orchestra of stringed things, but we’ll enjoy the experience no doubt. Hurt wanted to get back to a more raw and soulful sound, so has created new hybrid sounds from the celtic traditions. If you haven’t ever caught this man in concert, this is maybe the time to do so. His visits to Belfast are rare and sporadic, and probably some of the most vibrant and exciting music you’ll get to hear this year. MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/robinjameshurt
