Three Tales: new CD and Ireland tour
February 26, 2008 |
Nick Fitzsimmons writes: Belfast trio Three Tales launch their debut eponymous CD on March 10. I’ve been lucky enough to get my mitts on a pre-release copy of the album, and it’s safe to say it’s the best album from an Irish band in 2008 [steady - ed]. Three Tales are Ben McAuley, Desmond Mooney and “other people”, but what they create is a sonic collage somewhere between Television and Deerhoof. The record is sublimely recorded (no doubt owing to Ben’s involvement in the Oh Yeah Centre based Start Together Recording Studio along with Oppenheimer’s Rocky O’ Reilly) but the songwriting is just as captivating. Subtle time-changes and floating folk-rock melodies give way to Mogwai-esque guitar squalls, while vocally, Ben’s voice has an bleeding-heart edge that’s absolutely mesmerizing. I caught them live with Tracer AMC last Thursday at the Limelight and the show really delivered on the promises of the CD. You can catch them again this Thursday, February 28 with Panda Kopanda at the QUB Speakeasy or on their continuing tour of Ireland.
