Live at the Rotterdam: Acoustic Dan
February 25, 2008 |
By Rena Maguire: At long last, Acoustic Dan fans can get their fix of this unique firebrand variety of street poet, on his long awaited album Acoustic Dan Live at the Rotterdam. The album’s been produced and mastered by the heady mix of Nigel Martyn (Old Flat Top) and NBMC media’s Chris Dickson. It’s thirteen songs of mayhem and chaos, chronicaling the modern malaises of Belfast as an inner city. Dan has been on the music scene for a number of years, citing The Velvet Undergroud, Dylan and The Pogues as major influences. despite the natural comparisons to Billy Bragg, he claims never to have listened to the London bard’s works. No matter, you can enjoy Dan’s brand of flame driven street cred on this album, which gives a great flavour of his live performances. yes, you will ask yourself “did he really say that?” and the answer is probably yes, he did say whatever profanity you thought you heard. Plus a few others. Dan is often crude, raw, powerful, honest and funny in that slightly dark way much ulster humour is anyway. He stands unique in a world of fluffiness and faux-irishness. His brand of music is the real sound of the less gentrified streets of Belfast - if Divis flats and Rathcoole could speak, they’d quote Dan. The album is available via Dan’s myspace page www.myspace.com/acousticdanbelfast or at his gigs in and around Belfast.
