Sam Mahood tribute gig
January 5, 2008 |
Soul man Sam Mahood - a legend of the Irish shownband era - sadly passed away on Sunday, December 23. Back in the day of the Belfast Beat (Maritime Blues) scene, Sam Mahood played with Just Five and later toured with the Big Soul Band [who made the Commitments look like Val Doonican - ed]. As a mark of respect, respected Ulster blues band The Lee Hedley Band is organising a farewell concert to Mahood on Sunday, January 27 in the Kings Head, Belfast, with the help of a few key people in the showbiz scene. The show will run from lunchtime on Sunday, January 27 until 8-9pm. More Lee Hedley Band

So sorry to hear of the death of Sam, he was a legend will definitely be at the Kings Head on the day!! I followed Sam back in the early 60’s in the Maritime and was a great Just Five fan.
Having watched Rocky Road to Dublin last night, I felt nostalgic for Belfast late 1960s, when going to listen to Sam Mahood in the Marquee Club on a Saturday night (Astor on other nights) was the highlight of the week. He left a lasting impression. Googled his name and sad to read that he had just passed away. Hope that he enjoyed a good life in the intervening 40 years!
Wayyyyyyyy back we used to organise a Saturday night session in the local Scouts Hut on Victoria Avenue , Newtownards and Sam and the Band were frequent artists, we shared many a glass of Mundies and some great blues,. very sadly missed but not forgotten (see website) to all the fans out there, keep the faith, and safeguard the memories, they were great days indeed…..
My sister and I went to a lot of Sams gigs at Sammy Houstons Jazz Club. He was fantastic and I’ll always remember him singing Knock on Wood - brilliant. Last time I saw Sam was in the late seventies - he was a milkman in Lisburn.
