SellaBand punt yields beer divvy
December 20, 2007 |
SellaBand is a Web 2.0 contraption that lets music fans sponsor unknown bands/artists by buying shares (”parts”) in those same bands/artists. Once a band has raised $50k by racking up sales of 5000 parts, SellaBand arranges a professional studio session. The recorded songs are then sold to new fans, and both the artists and owners (called “Believers”) of their parts receive a share of the income generated through download sales and ad revenues. Recently, some lucky Believers actually received their first payout - enough to buy a round of drinks, anyway - which was credited to their Believer balance. While the payout is small beer, it’s a sign that SellaBand’s crowd-funded/reward business model is working. SellaBand is now working on deals with media agencies in the USA, UK and the Netherlands. update: SellaBand has just confirmed a partnership with Amazon.co.uk as its exclusive e-tailer for the UK starting 2008. A dedicated SellaBand Store launches in January 2008 and Amazon UK has started pre-ordering albums by Nemesea, Cubworld and Second Person. These are set for release on January 21, 2008.
