Tom prospects for Californian fans
December 18, 2007 |
Indie/alt artist Tom McShane is the latest musician from Ulster to expand his touring into the US writes UlsterMusic.com contributor Nick Fitzsimons. Tom’s recent tour, which took in Seattle (Washington), Portland (Oregon), Los Angeles (SoCal) and a two-night stand in San Francisco, focused on urban areas, especially those with large student populations - a key market for Tom’s music. “People are finding out about music in completely new ways” explains Kim Helmuth, tour manager for Penny Distribution, which helped organize the tour. “With Tom’s potential fans, print magazines, traditional radio and television are becoming irrelevant as music discovery tools - but by focusing on internet and college radio, music blogs (via HypeMachine), social networks and other digital music portals, we drew good crowds to all of Tom’s west coast dates.”
Tom’s first releases - the lo-fi, home-recorded Songs Are Sad and the follow-up single, Scene at the Citadel - have attracted critical acclaim and earned Tom a strong fanbase. Helmuth continues: “This tour is the first step in a long-term relationship with Tom and his fans on the west coast. We’re aiming to grow Tom’s fanbase organically, and by that standard the tour has been a huge success.” Tom McShane returns to play 3 dates in Belfast early January 2008.
