Cool, Downtown under the hammer

December 15, 2007 |

Cool FMDespite attempts by short-changed shareholders to thwart the impending deal, publisher EMAP is moving to dispose of its radio station assests - including Northern Ireland’s first ever commerical radio station Downtown Radio (DTR), and sister greater Belfast 97.4MHz broadcaster Cool FM - to German media monster Bauer, publisher of a roster of women’s magazines including Bella and Take a Break. DTR suffered job losses early 2007 when English owner EMAP proposed job cuts, mainly affecting news coverage. Established 30 years ago in 1977, Newtownards based Downtown - with a broadcast footprint covering most of Ulster outside greater Belfast, and a DAB channel - has championed local music makers, including Snow Patrol, and served as boot camp for many aspiring DJs and media types.
