Virgin Megastore no more…
September 18, 2007 |
Richard Branson - the man who dared sue John Lennon - has jacked in the music retail side of Virgin’s various business interests and flogged his UK and Ireland Virgin Megastore chain to the incumbent management team. The stores will be rebranded Zavvi from later this year. Virgin sold the sister US chain last year. [the Belfast Megabore has been selling CDs and DVDs at rip-off prices for years - ed] Several long-established record shops in Belfast have shuttered over the last while: The Gramaphone Shop [sic], Southside Records [Lisburn Road], Hector’s House [North Street], and xxx xxxx [Botannic Avenue]. Bizarrely, Billy McBurney’s Premier Records store [near Smithfield Market] in north Belfast has been trading continuosly since 1926. His is the oldest record store in the whole of Ireland.
