According to recent market research [PriceWaterhouseCoopers - ed] the Chinese entertainment and media market - including the music business - is expected to grow from $90 billion in 2007 to $137 billion in 2010. [China has even specified its own low-cost high-definition DVD format called CH-DVD, a “patent-lite” version of standard HD-DVD, in time for the Olympics - ed]. At the next MIDEM music event - January 2008, Cannes - the Chinese Ministry of Culture hosts the 42nd MIDEM Opening Night Party at the Martinez Hotel and showcases a slice of top Chinese talent. China’s huge potential for the music industry will be highlighted in a number of focused conferences bringing together Chinese government officials and industry executives. In response to the additional number of Chinese companies expected to attend MIDEM 2008, a dedicated country pavilion will be erected in the exhibition area. Dominique Leguern, MIDEM Director, said “Chinese consumers are showing particular interest in mobile-delivered music products and the potential for growth in China is huge. MIDEM will not only allow our international clients to deepen their understanding of the Chinese market and make new business contacts, but it will also provide a showcase for exciting Chinese talent to the 10,000 music industry executives who attend the event.”
