Wal-Mart sells DRM-less mp3

August 23, 2007 |

US retail goliath Wal-Mart - owner of ASDA - has launched a digital music download service that sells songs from EMI and Universal Music Group without the digital rights management (DRM) copy protection that restricts the range of devices on which tunes can be played. The move, coming as Amazon plans a similar service, marks a challenge to the market dominance of Apple’s iTunes, since it offers music that can be played both on the iPod/iPhone and on less popular - but much cheaper - mp3 players, such as machines from Sony, Samsung, and Philips, and mobiles/smartphones from Nokia, etc.
