The Rotterdam Bar: future rubble
May 18, 2007 |
The Rotterdam Bar, the once-popular live music venue down by the dockside of the river Lagan in Belfast’s historic Sailortown, has been shuttered pending total demolition to make way for new-build appartments. Botannic Inns, former owners of The Rotterdam, located in the cul-de-sac end of Pilot Street, off Corporation Street, sold the ailing business some time back, having vowed to turnaround its fortunes when they took ownership. This quaint Victorian premises - friendly, intimate, atmospheric - hosted many up-and-coming electric bands, DJs and acoustic acts - including singer-songwriter Katie Melua and Brian Kennedy - over the years, peaking in popularity and cool-quotient during the mid-80s, when it was the de facto drop-in centre for musicians, bohemians, bikers, tourists, and real-ale drinkers. Sadly, The Rotterdam joins a growing list of venerable public houses that have closed over the last number of years to make way for New Belfast: The (original) Kitchen Bar, The (cosmopolitan) Liverpool Bar(?).

Here’s what The New York Times said:
One of Belfast’s best-loved pubs, this small traditional place in the Cathedral Quarter eschews modern annoyances — you’ll find no TVs above the bar here. Instead there are roaring fires and good, traditional pub food, as well as an excellent pint of Guinness. This is one of the better music pubs in town, so expect Jazz on Tuesdays, blues on Wednesdays, acoustic on Thursdays, and a mix of good sounds at the weekend.

[those plasma-TV fixated sociophobes of these “Alphaville” appartments just won’t know what real entertainment there once was to be had - ed]
