Ulster-born doctor Eoghan Colgan - from Newcastle, Co. Down - took the main prize at the O2 Undiscovered 2007 award ceremony in London, England impressing the panel of judges with his self-penned song The Only One I Want. Over 3000 submissions were received from across the UK in the British mobile phone company’s competition aimed at finding unsigned, talented musicians. As part of his prize, Colgan will perform at O2’s summer festival in June; record company Polydor, another competition sponsor, plan to release his winning single.
Telepathing to UlsterMusic.com, Colgan, who now lives in Glasgow, Scotland said he was “gob-smacked”. Coglan started playing guitar at 16, and then studied medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, where he met other musicians and began songwriting and performing. “I would ideally like to pursue the music for a period of time and perhaps go back to medicine. I love medicine, but I can’t shake this love of music,” he said. His music has been compared by others to Jeff Buckley.
