The Ulster Hall on Belford Street, Belfast’s prestige Victorian venue (opened in 1862 - ed) is to close within a matter of weeks - for a period of 18 months to 2 years - while major refurbishments take place. Two years is a long “dark” period for such a major venue. No further details are at hand at the time of writing. [get one of our cub reporters on the job - ed]

According to a spokesperson, the back-stage “green room” facilities of the >100-year old complex are to be upgraded, and other developments - maybe a cafe, maybe a bar. James Young’s famous Group Theatre adjoining the Ulster Hall was closed last year after years of under-investment by Belfast City Council, which diverted arts & leisure funds to Belfast’s then gleaming, but costly, “white elephant” - the Waterfront Hall, still heavily subsidised by Belfast ratepayers.
