A new weekly jazz brunch event starts in East Belfast on Sunday, 18 October. The long-established SD Bell & Company owned coffee joint – located in Knock on Belfast’s Upper Newtownards Road – is the venue for a regular jazz session hosted by saxophonist Dan Forshaw. Forshaw, a player, teacher and occassional sideman, is described as “one of the leading young lights on the British jazz scene.” The popular Knock coffee bar has decided to open on Sunday’s in the hope that this new conconction of music, food and atmosphere will blend to entice music fans of all ages. The live music brunch will take place each Sunday, the coffee bar opening from 10am and the music commencing at 12. Admission is free.
For the first event, Cultra vocalist Rosie Timoney and Bangor pianist Mark Johnston, who together form the group Dan Forshaw’s Ulster Fry, will join Forsahw. The trio, who have performed across the province, have bewitched audiences with their renditions of standards such as ‘Every time We Say Goodbye’ and ‘Fly me to the Moon’ [and let me bombard your craters - ed] along with covers of more contemporary songs such as ‘Valerie’.
